About the Author
K.N. Govinda Rajan retired as the Head of the Medical Physics and Safety Section at Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC) in Mumbai, India, in 2006. As the head of medical physics at BARC, he was in charge of radiation safety and quality assurance of all medical institutions in the country. He has many years of experience in medical physics, medical dosimetry, and medical radiation safety. He has initiated several programs in India in the fields of mammography, diagnostic radiology, and radiation therapy with the objective of optimizing diagnostic information to patient dose in diagnostic procedures and target dose to normal tissue dose in radiation therapy treatments. He has helped set up a medical imaging laboratory in his division to test medical films coming into the country and to set minimum standards for these films. In the fields of brachytherapy and external beam therapy, he has developed quality audit procedures and audited several centers to ensure radiation safety and in-house QA.
His fields of specialization are medical radiation dosimetry, traceable calibration for brachytherapy and external beam therapy, high-energy dosimetry protocols, medical radiation safety, and ionizing radiation regulations in medicine.
Dr. Rajan has contributed significantly to medical radiation dosimetry at the international level. He has represented his country in several technical committee meetings at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Vienna, Austria, relating to medical radiation dosimetry, medical radiation safety, safety and security of radiation sources, etc. His contributions have appeared in several IAEA publications relating to these fields. He has also served as chief investigator of several coordinated
research projects of the IAEA. As an IAEA expert in dosimetry, he has helped other countries set up calibration facilities at ISO beam qualities. He has trained several IAEA fellows in dosimetry and calibration.
Govinda Rajan was professor of medical physics at PSG College of Technology in Coimbatore, India, between 2007 and 2014. Currently living in the United States, he still coordinates radiation safety research activities at PSG Institute of Medical Sciences Research and Hospitals, and he works with students during his visits to India. His research is generously funded by the Indian Atomic Energy Regulatory Board.
