We live in the age of Creflo Dollar's gospel, Bart Ehrman's textual criticism, Rob Bell's universalism, Joel Osteen's preaching, and Oprah Winfrey's theology. If the circumstances surrounding Dr. Machen's early 20th century world were bad--what has it come to today?!There indeed is nothing new under the sun. The battles that were wrestled in the past are the same battles we are fighting today (though perhaps under different names). Machen iterates, "The greatest menace to the Christian Church today comes not from the enemies outside, but from the enemies within; it comes from the presence within the church of a type of faith and practice that is anti-Christian to the core." It is therefore that menace to the precious church of Jesus Christ that Machen fights against with all righteous tenacity of a shepherd whose flock is under siege by wolves.Machen reveals that "Liberal Christianity" is not Christianity at all. He goes as far as to say that liberalism is no "mere hersey" as it proceeds from a "totally different root". Liberal Christianity, as Machen defines in the opening, is a false gospel. It has a different view of God, a far more positive view of man, a different view of Jesus Christ, and therefore a far different view of salvation. Jesus under the liberal teaching is no longer the "object of our faith" but a faithful example to us of ethics, morals, and love for all. Man needs only follow his example alone and all will be well! To that Machen says--FALSE RELIGION. If Jesus did not live, die, and rise from the dead in historical time and space we have nothing. A gospel without the supernatural, Machen concedes, may be easier to believe--but it would not be worth believing! We are in desperate need of deliverance from our sin, and only the blood of Jesus can satisfy that need.Machen also includes a brief and incredibly strong defense of the authenticity of Paul's letters as well as the unity of the Scriptures as a whole. "Christianity and Liberalism" is an excellent defense for the Truth of the Gospel as expressed throughout Scripture and could not be more relevant for today. I marked down one star because the font was scanned directly from the hard copy--and not the Amazon "Bookerly" font I prefer for the Kindle. Some words were impossible to read as some letters were distorted. All in all 5 stars for Machen. 3 for Kindle edition (99 cent purchase keeps it from going any lower).

The quality of the text is abysmal, it hurts my eyes. The quality and content of the writing is extraordinary, but the text itself is smeared and muddy. This book is available in the public domain. Don't buy it from Amazon, much better copies are available for free download. That being said, by all means read the book! It's amazing that Menchen can perfectly describe modern liberalism as far back as 1923, before the sexual revolution of the Sixties, which seemed to me the object of liberal worship today. Liberal Christianity is anti-Christian, as Menchen so ably demonstrates in this book.

As I read this book, J. Gresham Machen reminds me of many things, all characteristic of Old Protestantism, and even overtones of classic Puritanism. His writes with the passion of Whitefield, his words have a fire like Wesley, and he possesses both the clarity and contrarianism of Calvin. He's a conservative Presbyterian who preaches like a revivalistic Pentecostal. Simply put, we need more men like Machen in today's church. I don't know about you, but folks, we need Christ, and Christ crucified. Not the Jesus of our imagination, but the Jesus of the blood-soaked Scriptures. In this book, Machen brings his spiritual hammer (the Word of God), and battles the false philosophies of this world (2 Cor. 10:5-6). He unsheathes his sword, and wields it against a false religion, a pretender that cloaks itself in Christian language - "Liberalism". This religion is a marriage of naturalism, humanism, secularism, and sentimentalism all rolled into one. It's anything but Christian.The voices of Old Liberalism (F. Schleiermacher, A. Ritschl, W. Bousset) that Machen is doing serious war with here, are in so many "conservative" denominations and churches today it's shameful. Every "elementary" Christian issue he speaks about - Christ, the Bible, Sin, Salvation, the Church, God & Man - is so diluted or discarded in today's American "church" that most of us are in a Hebrews 5:11-14 situation at best, and a 2 Tim. 4:1-4 situation at worst. Both our recent and present generations are products of the continued fight for the basic truths of the Bible. Both grandparents and parents who have grown up in the church have not endured sound doctrine, and preachers have not "kept the faith". It's passed on to the "Now" generation of church youth, who believe in an imaginary Jesus, and live in a virtual world.Machen speaks against this false religion in devastating fashion. He speaks matter-of-factly and with biblical exactitude. His writing is not for the weak-stomached Christian. Those who are used to pastoral jokes, cute stories about Easter, and fun vacations at your small group - you probably need a "Diet" or "Baby Machen" version of this book. He'll punch you in the mouth if you're not careful. I'm serious. Even for the weathered Christian, the person steeped in the Puritans, the Old Presbyterians, the serious Pentecostals, the student of Edwards, the lover of Lloyd-Jones, this is honestly a spiritually exhausting book to read. You're basically reading all-out theological/spiritual warfare. You've been translated into another reality of the spiritual battle raging which didn't end with the Fundamentals, with Machen, with the Chicago Statement, etc., but will rage and continue to rage. It's a battle between true and false religion. Between a Jesus who is a teacher and a Jesus who is the Savior.Machen, in a concise 153 pages, opens up the biblical canons and fires everything the Word of God has against this false religion. In my estimation it's a book every Christian must read and arm themselves with. There is a profound and substantive difference between true and false religion - Jesus.

Arthur Hertzberg first published this Zionism reader in 1959. That was long before the "new historians" (Israeli Jewish historians, that is) began to subject the self-congratulatory Zionist "narrative" to critical examination in light of Israeli documents covering the creation of the Israeli state began to be released in the 80s. In consequence, this is a very incomplete overview of the Zionist "idea," in which the Nakba (the permanent exile of many hundreds of thousands of indigenous Palestinian people to make way for the Jewish state in 1947-1949) hardly makes an appearance. In spite of this very serious blindspot, it's hard to find a more compact and well-considered compendium of foundational Zionist writers. Even students of Levant history like me who are entirely opposed to the core ideology of Zionism will find here a useful guide to its political, economic, spiritual, and philosophical foundations. These are not a series of manifestly odious Mein Kampf tracts. They are serious writings of sincere men (no women here) trying to grapple with the condition of Jews in a European world that rejected and often oppressed them. Their ideas deserve our respect, even if, with the benefit of hindsight, we now can see how they contained the seeds of the moral and political disaster of Israel-Palestine today.

This book is a classic and is richly deserving of all the praise it has gotten and the many, many copies that have been sold.

This book can be useful as a nice supplement on Zionist thought. As claimed, it assembles essays by some of the most famous architects of Zionism in competing schools, such as Theodor Herzl, Ahad Ha'am, Rabbi Kook, Vladimir Jabotinsky, Ber Borochov, Max Nordau, etc.. However, for those seeking a single reader of Zionist thought (e.g., for a course on the topic) it falls far short. Like any editor, Hertzberg faces a task inherently constrained by space, but his selections are sometimes capricious and would be misleading to readers who want to trust that a particular essay is truly representative of that author's thought. This volume may be worth buying to get key passages such as, say, Herzl's conception of the Jewish people in his seminal work The Jewish State and Klatzkin's critique of the Jewish diaspora (galut) in one volume. But those familiar with this field and especially those concerned with Zionist conceptualizations of Palestine's indigenous population will find key arguments missing. This book shouldn't be used in isolation from skilled historical analyses of Zionism such as Yoram Hazony's The Jewish State: The Struggle For Israel's Soul, Walter Laquer's A History of Zionism: From the French Revolution to the Establishment of the State of Israel or canonical critical studies such as Avi Shlaim's The Iron Wall. Which means that, for courses, it may not be worth the money.

This book is first and foremost a gathering of original primary sources material, and as such it is an important addition to any library or student of Zionism. That being said, it is a collection of speeches and writings, and as such it must judged by what was excluded as much as by what is included. To include Rabbi Mohilever but exclude Zangwill, and to dedicate a combined 45 pages to Klatzkin, Ahad Ha-Am, and Berdichevski while affording Jabotinsky and Ben-Gurion only a mere 5 pages combined, speaks volumes about the authors agenda and point of view. This is to be expected from an author whose view point on the Israeli - Palestinian conflict as well as American Jews - Israel relations were rejected and dismissed by both Golda Meir and Begin. The Introduction has a pronounced Rabbinical, Diaspora, 'civil rights-like' slant and the selected material reflects the authors bias. It may reflect some of the Zionist ideas, but certainly not The Zionist Idea.

Each selection is preceded by a 2-page synopsis of the thinker.Although compiled decades ago, the writings are timeless and the commentary feels fresh. This edition is from 1997, so maybe they did some edits to keep it fresh.This material is just begging to be read by anyone with even the vaguest interest in Israel. History repeats itself, and by reading this, it becomes clear that the struggle for the basic Jewish right to self-determination continues to this very day. The need for a Jewish homeland and the conflict in 2011 have both been ongoing since the inception of modern Zionism. Read for yourself.Make this available on the Kindle!

This remains the most comprehensive collection of Zionist thought, and the introductory notes to selected writings from the various schools of thought within the movement are clear and well written. One caution: it is a work for college-level or graduate level study, and not appropriate for younger readers.

About the Author

Francesco Cesarini has taught Erlang/OTP for fourteen years to all parties involved in the software cycle, including students, developers, support and testers, as well as project and technical managers. I like that the book mentioned Riak library and SD Erlang and clarified CAP and FLP.I really don't like the solutions too specific for Erlang. Also, you don't really learn any distributed algorithms from this book and views of this book are outdated. I highly recommend reading books like "Learn you some erlang for good" and "Design data-intensive application" instead. I personally recommend learning programming language like Elixir and Scala for future distributed applications instead of Erlang.It is the book for nobody. It is outdated.

Great book with very good sample code. Clear and concise explanations. You do need to know something about the language to follow along.

The most in-depth book on OTP around!

I had been trying to learn OTP, and this book really helped cement the concepts in my mind. It's very thorough, and I found it easy to follow and digest.

An invaluable resource for learning OTP. I was able to pick it up with minimal Erlang knowledge and learn more Erlang along the way.

I believe the whole point of writing reviews is to help others decide by giving an unbiased view which is very difficult most of the time. Yet, I'll try to highlight certain facts along with my comments without stealing the thunder in any way. The initial chapters of the book require basic level of understanding of Erlang/OTP while later chapters (ch-13 to 15) are mostly generic. The content is very well organized which is great for both cover-to-cover and ad-hoc content reading styles. The book takes a practical approach towards the subject, which needless to say in itself is very complex. This approach helps the reader to grasp the topic while looking at real world scenarios. It also does a great job at clearly demarcating the corner-cases and special conditions which can be skipped the first time for cover-to-cover book reading style. This helps in getting a hold of the usual (sunny-day) cases before digging into the rainy-day or special conditions. Although I was familiar with prior art on various architectural styles (say Amazon DynamoDB and Riak) but reading this book made more sense as to how that applies and more so with Erlang/OTP. In my view the book maintains a very delicate balance between content and its application while stops just before trying to spoon-feed too much. So, it does what any good book must do - builds the interest in the subject and encourage self learning / discovery which follows thereafter. I must warn you though if you are not an Erlanger, you would become one after reading this book.The book maintains a good balance between text, code and pictures to explain the subject. Although it was clear to me due to prior art but at certain junctures the graphics should be enhanced to aid the first-time-readers. I am a huge fan of separate reference section, which is missing in the book although they are embedded at places where things are introduced for the first time. Having a separate section saves time when coming back just for them apart exposing the user to specialized content (say research papers). Kudos to Francesco and Steve for making the topic look ever so simple.

I highly recommend this book. My favorite part of the book is the last 4 chapters. Less heavy on code, these chapters describe stratgies and give examples of how to design scalable and fault tolerant distributed systems. And at the end of each chapter the authors sum up and accumulate a list of ten steps that you need to follow when building such systems.

Her road was a painful one but all that she experienced fortified her work process and personality. There is some beautiful visual writing and depth in bell hooks' bone black.
