Callwood details the band's genesis as teenage friends in Ann Arbor, their time living together in their legendary party houses in the 1960s, and the recording of the three original Stooges albums. He examines the addition of James Williamson to the band on Raw Power and how it changed the band's sound and dynamic, along with the band's fateful meeting with David Bowie on its first British tour. As Iggy broke out as a solo artist during the 1970s and 1980s, Callwood charts the Asheton brothers' post-Stooges experiences, with Ron's turns in The New Order, Destroy All Monsters, and Dark Carnival, and Scott Asheton's time with the Farleys and Sonic's Rendezvous Band. He also provides an overview of Iggy's solo career, the seeds of a reunion that were planted with a collaboration on Iggy's Skull Ring album, and the eventual reformation of the band and the recording of their fourth album, The Weirdness, in 2004.

Grade 6-9-Claidi, an orphaned lady's maid to a cruel and mindless princess, jumps at the chance to escape with a handsome air balloonist who has been shot down and imprisoned. Leading Nemian through the dark tunnels and out into the Waste, however, she begins to have second thoughts, which she records regularly in the journal entries that form this enjoyable fantasy. Through encounters with tribes that seem kind, and fierce desert bandits, she learns that appearances can be deceiving. When she shows interest in Argul, leader of the bandits, Nemian pleads with her to keep on traveling with him to his home. Nemian's City and its ruling Wolf Tower are bleakly stark and sad, completely bound by rules and the roll of the dice. It turns out that Nemian's quest was to bring Claidi to his grandmother as her successor. Realizing that the punishing cruelties under which the people lived were products of the old lady's twisted imagination, Claidi takes over and breaks the Rules, proclaiming there is to be no more LAW, before being rescued, yet again, by Argul. The satisfying conclusion completes the story but leaves plenty of room for Claidi's journals to continue in sequels. The fantasy world is clearly and humorously described; its varied cultures are both amusing and believable. In spite of her moodiness, the practical and strong-willed Claidi is a likable heroine with whom fantasy readers can easily identify and they will look forward to her continuing adventures.

Lee (Saint Fire, not reviewed, etc.) opens a new series framed, belt and suspenders, in chapters and diary entries. Having grown up serving a petty, vicious princess, Claidi jumps at the chance to help in the escape of Nemian, a handsome, imprisoned prince. In their journey across the barren Waste, the pair weather dust storm and monster attack, pass through towns where sheep and clocks are worshipped, and encounter the Hulta, nomads led by Argul, a kingly youth who takes a shine to Claidi. She is attracted to him, too, especially after he rescues her from a sacrificial rite, but though familiarity has worn some of Nemian’s glitter away, Claidi decides to go on with the prince to his home in distant Wolf Tower. To her dismay, she discovers that Nemian is already married, and that she is the victim of an elaborate ruse designed to force her back into servitude. Lee gives Claidi a modern-sounding voice—believing that some of the Hulta voted against her rescue: “Now when I talk to them, I wonder which ones didn't think I was worth the trouble. I don't blame them. But yuk”—and regards the religion and politics of the Waste's residents sardonically. In the end, Argul rescues her again, and off the two ride into upcoming sequels. I have been reading Potzsch's books for the past couple years and they are very interesting to me. I have an interest in German history and culture and I always learn something from his novels. This one had a lot of twists and was enjoyable to read. Having such a young hero was at times implausible, but if one uses her imagination--who cares? Of course, there was an indication that there would be a sequel to this book.I would start with his book, "The Hangman's Daughter," a very good read.

This the first book by Oliver Pötzsch I've read. It was not billed as a YA novel, but it definitely is one. That may or may not be an artifact of the translation. Regardless, it was a decent YA novel. If that was the author's intent, then he succeeded. The background history of the Thirty Years War was sound, though only referred to in passing. The vocabulary used to describe swords and fencing techniques indicate a greater familiarity with European swordsmanship than is common among authors. The characters are more stock than flat, more routine than deeply developed. I'm sure most literate teen boys would enjoy it.

This book is a departure from the author's Hangman's Daughter series. While filled with believable characters and set in well researched historical backdrops including the conflict with Swedes and mercenaries, this book veers into magic and sorcerers as well. All in all this introduces a sense of wonder that is more fun than straight history. The protagonists are young, and a few the plot twists are at times either somewhat predictable or slightly implausible, but young adults and mature fantasy readers should all enjoy this book. Looking forward to the next one in this series!

Not the Hangman's Daughter, but not bad. As always we get a nice history lesson which is always a pleasure for me, as I know little about medieval German history. I read it very quickly, as I wanted to always see what was going to happen next. Only issue I have had with this and the last couple of Oliver's books that have been translated to English is the very strange use of modern American English which is completely out of sync with the setting of the time period in Germany. Almost slang phrases appear in the middle of a tense confrontation with an Inquisitor, sort of jolts you and you lose the thread while you try to recoup the time period and mood and terror when something like "hey you guys" gets inserted. But still I love Oliver Potzsch and await his next book eagerly.

It was a good book. I enjoyed reading it but the ending is what makes me give it 3 stars instead of 4. I feel the ending really wasn't a conclusion, like there was too much set up for a sequel. The last line really should have read "Too be continued......"

I'll give Book of the Night five stars just because I like reading historical fiction, and the plot kept me engaged. Swashbuckling war and magic make good partners. The obligatory villain is truly a bad guy, too! I've read several of Pötzch's books, and they are good at transporting me to a different place and time and cultures that are foreign to me. I'll look forward to his next book.

Having been a fan of Oliver Pötzsch since the Hangman's Daughter series, the Book of the Night was filled with swashbuckling action, die-hard friendship and a dose of sinister evil countered by a white witch. All in all a fun read. The only reason for the one star markdown was Pötzsch's choice of narrator. Thoroughly American, he was incapable of even a trace of any convincing German accent, including the total butchery of German names and places. He even spoke the German letter ß as a "b" when it is actually a double "s" sound. Made me feel at times that the story took place in the Midwest. So read it; don't bother with Audible.

I'm enamored by the flowing adventures of the main character in the story, by the name of Lucus. The storyline is spellbinding, the historical narration of the war, the travels through the country's city's, this is a great read. It has tremendous importance in the history of mankind centuries ago. Are we still similar to those from centuries ago, still fighting the same types of wars? Id say so as a Nam vet.
