It's a nice overview, but it only scratches the surface. However I found it to be a good introduction to the topic. It is very PC-centric, and not that useful if you are doing embedded work.Also I feel like the author doesn't really explain the concepts that well, like for example what the various structures actually represent, like which ones are associated with the driver as a whole, which ones are specific to each instance, etc.

It's a great book on writing device drivers for FreeBSD. Very well explanation onFreeBSD device driver architecture.The study of the book is also a good academic practice on how to usesynchronisation and concurrency primitives.I'm strongly recommend the book along with the classic"The Design and Implementation of the FreeBSD operating system"for anyone delving in depth with operating system kernels,using the superb FreeBSD as a case study.

Great price and excellent condition.

This is a really helpful book, I have read and searched forth and back the Freebsd documentation for clues for starting driver development, well you could read the source code of the drivers as well, but is it better to read this book first as it will make things clear or you will be more familiar with the current infrastructure, this book is really is a must if you want to start digging on FBSD driver coding, I really recommend it.

Most programmers consider device drivers the darkest of the dark computer arts, but to write a good device driver what's needed is a decent template and some good documentation. The FreeBSD Operating Systems has plenty of templates, in the form of already working drivers, and with the publication of Joseph Kong's latest book, _FreeBSD Device Drivers_, now there is good documentation as well.The book takes the reader from the simplest types of drivers, such as those used to do serial communication, up through disk, usb and network drivers, which are far more complex and require the programmer to have a greater understanding about the operating system in which they're working. The introductory chapters give enough of the required background information for writing a driver, covering areas such as memory allocation, and synchronization primitives, without preventing the reader from, very quickly, getting down to working on real code.One of the beauties of this book is that it covers running code in a real world operating system, making it far more relevant for both students and working programmers. Many books on programming create neat and easy problems that the authors think will take the reader through the necessary steps to understanding a concept, but this book doesn't shy away from the nitty gritty details of low level code.The book has an easy to read, narrative style which makes reading it an enjoyable experience, a seeming rarity in technical books.I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to truly understand what goes on, under the hood, in an operating system.

I already have the other book by the same author, Joseph Kong, "Designing BSD Rootkits: An Introduction to Kernel Hacking" and liked it very much, so when I got the chance to get an advance copy of his new book for review, "FreeBSD Device Drivers: A Guide for the Intrepid", I couldn't say no. :)To make the review more practical, I decided to write a simple driver myself and posted about it and the book on the FreeBSD forums, to find that post follow the WWW: link in the pkg-descr of the comms/uartlirc port (you can also look the port up on freshports.org .)About the book:The book introduces you to almost everything you need to know to write many types of drivers, it does this mainly by doing code walkthroughs for several example- and real-world drivers. It obviously cannot cover _everything_ (sound drivers for example are not covered, nor is miibus(4)), but what it covers I'd say should give you enough information to be able to look at manpages and existing drivers for missing details. 100% recommended!

I started this boos a novice FreeBSD user, however after having have read this book I now understand What is going on under the hood of my BSD system, This book has allowed me to understand the technical process taking place in the kernel that you are not always aware of, even when running a BSD system. The book is very well laid out in the way that it conveys the complicated topic at hand. The author truly knows his stuff because he explains it so simply, yet makes you understand on a complected level. In order for an individual to explain a complicated topic simply they must truly understand what is taking place. This book explains everything from Memory access, modules, to network drivers. This book is great for getting people to understand what a driver is to how to make and edit a actual driver itself! I will be handing this book out to every person I know who also uses FreeBSD because I feel it truly helps you understand how to take full control of your computer and make the computer work for you. This book will be by my side every time I work with any FreeBSD drivers.

This book is quite thorough and well-balanced, written from the point of view of someone defending women's right to be known for scientific contributions. Barbara Goldsmith has worked diligently to present Marie Curie as someone so obsessed with her branch of physics that many in her family actually became martyrs to X rays and radium's radioactivity. An interesting and unsettling journey.

One of my favorite things about Goldsmith's writings is how in the prologue or introduction, she tells the reader what she thinks, why she was interested in the topic she wrote about and her reflections of the topic/person. This book is no exception. Goldsmith informs us of major themes in her writing that includes: "Why are some women trapped in their environment while others escape, or circumvent, or ignore these obstacles? How did society and family affect their aspirations? Why do some women seek independence while others want to tread a prescribed path?" (p. 18). So begins Goldsmith's telling of the story of Marie Curie, an exploration of the inner woman. At one point Goldsmith revealed, "She had learned that if she had enough patience and tenacity the seemingly impossible could be accomplished. She masked her feelings with a cool intellect" (p. 45).Curie's story is about the inner workings of a scientist, sexism, duty/obligation in marriage, and how a woman lived her life. A wonderful insightful book!

depends heavily on Eve Curie's biography of her mother - but respectfully tells of Marie Curie's professional and personal struggles. She was my hero when I read about her as a teenager - Now that I am a mother of adult daughters, I can feel her strength, loneliness, and courage.

Marie Curie was known for being a "first mover" in many areas -- she was one of the first women to receive a Nobel Prize for her discovery of new elements (polonium and radium), was one of the first women to receive various teaching "chairs" throughout her career, and in France, was considered nothing short of a "goddess" of science, which is pretty remarkable, given the fact that during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, women were considered good for little more than bearing children and housekeeping chores.The only thing I knew about Marie Curie, however, was that she discovered radium (which ultimately led to more experimentation in radioactivity) and that the majority of her notes and clothing ended up sealed in lead faults because they, too, were radioactive and dangerous. I decided Goldsmith's biography would be a good one with which to start, and I wasn't disappointed.Goldsmith moves through Curie's life very well, explaining her scientific discoveries and experiments without bogging down the reader in a lot of scientific language. The author begins Curie's life from her girlhood in Poland, brings her to France and her marriage with Pierre Curie, the love of her life, and concludes the narrative with Curie's death, and how her eldest daughter, Irene, carried on her parents' work (and also died at an early age). The thing I really liked about this book was that the author kept her own opinions and feelings to herself -- as any good nonfiction writer should, she reported only the facts.The book also shed some very good light on the huge lack of safeguards there were, at the time, in dealing with dangerous substances such as radium. I was appalled, for example, at the casual mention that the Curies handled this stuff casually, even using pipettes to suck up the substance to transport it to another location. I was further perplexed by the lack of safeguards -- I am a thyroid cancer survivor, and whenever anyone gave me radiation treatments (in the form of pills), these pills came in lead containers and were handed to be my radiation technicians who wore lead, before I, myself, was isolated from others. A picture in the book of Irene Jouliet-Curie, sucking up a radioactive substance through a pipette, had me baffled.For me, personally, this book is just short of five stars because I am interested in context when it comes to major discoveries. Radium became a huge part of society for a long time because of its supposedly "curative" factors and the author does address this. But I would have been interested in learning about Curies' efforts to keep radium her own personal property, and how she addressed charlatans who were in competition with her for this substance. Again, Goldsmith addresses this, but I would have liked to have seen more.Otherwise, the book did provide a very good overview of Marie Curie and her accomplishments. More importantly, it made me want to learn more about her and the times in which she survived.

I knew next to nothing about Curie. This is well written, detailed and well documented. It also humanized this great scientist as she labored to excel in a scientific world dominated by men.

I thoguht this book was fantastic! It portrayed Marie Curie as a genius but unlike Eva Curie's biography, we learned all sides of Curie's character and life. The true romance bewteen Marie and Pierre is not lessoned by the absence of Eve's cloying desire to make Marie perfect. Descriptions of the experiments were complete and exciting. I recommend this book highlyl.

Gives good accurate detail taken from personal papers, documents, letters and worksheets written by Marie. Her detailed writings and personal daily journals provide a look into her daily life that would not be able to be known otherwise. You get to know Marie in a way that is unique. Very good read.

I found this book very enlightening. I never realized the struggles that scientist go through. I certainly respect the determination and courage of Madam Curie.I am glad I read this book.
